LIVERPOOL AND THE BIG ISSUE
Read Alan Shearers criticism of Jurgen Klopp this season stating theres no difference between Klopps team and that of Rodgers. That’s a bold claim because Klopp have brought champions league football to Anfield in his two full season at Liverpool. Rodgers couldn’t offer such on a consistent basis. Looking at Shearers argument , you can’t help to agree Liverpool still look vulnerable in certain areas.
For Rodgers, even If Suarez and Sturridge are in form and banging in goals they still shipped in goals at the back costing them the league After spending millions of pounds on defenders in the transfer window there’s been no real change even when Klopp replaced him.
We still see the same vulnerability in the team this season. After Suarez left , and Sturrridge was hit with injuries Rodgers struggled to sign a proven goal scorer.
Klopp is still struggling to get one when other title contenders have Aguero, Lukaku, players who will comfortably contribute over 20 goals per season to the team Liverpool don’t have one. Another issue is Liverpool still lack the mental strength to kill off difficult games which was problem for Brendan Rodgers team.
Theres always a feeling that If the opposition is compact , sit back , soak up pressure and pick moments to take the game to them they might collapse.
There’s also that gut feeling that no matter how they soar high in a season they need just one game to drop them out of the sky.
My assessment is Liverpool board got lazy in the transfer market this summer after Sallah signing.
They have done well in previous transfer windows building a quality side.
You can see quality in this Liverpool team. Philip Coutinho , Mane and co. Klopps been able to build this team to his taste enhanced more by the signing of Sallah.
The fact still remains signing this summer didn’t solve long standing issues at the back and the attack , the mental strength issue also.
That will be solved, if they sign more leaders. Its not just about signing better and technical players leaders are important in a team.
I don’t see a leader in Solanke and Chamberlain players Liverpool didn’t need this season.
Liverpool didn’t prioritize their signings this summer and its essential to prioritize according to your needs.
It was important they signed a center back and proven goal scorer to compete favourably in the league and champions league.
Imagine after signing Sallah and Robertson Liverpool pull out their cheque book and spend big on a centre back like Van Dijk and striker Pierre Aubameyang it doesn’t need to be them.
A centre back who’s a proven leader, calm, can organize his backline and be aggresssive when needed.
In that position they have a Matip who’s calm but not vocal, Lovren who’s aggressive but everywhere , Klavan Is a centre back who’s game is suited to the premier league but lacks a big personality I personally believe Klopp should give him more chance in the team. Looking at this defenders , there’s no real organizer in this team that’s why it’s so easy to break them down and catch them out of position.
The striker also. They should have spent big on a proven goalscorer someone who can carry the goal scoring burden of the team on its head.
I dont know why they didn’t go for Aubameyang who got over 30 goals last season and suits Klopp style. Players like Messi, Ronaldo, Aguero bring this to their clubs.
Theres no doubt about the creative talent in this team. Sallah, Mane , Firminho and Coutinho they can also contribute goals and they suit how Klopp wants to play. What I noticed in games against Sevilla and Burnley ,the attackers played without direction meaning they lacked a focal point.
The quality Morata, Aguero, Lukaku brings to their teams this season. No one to play on the shoulder of the lastman and stretch the back line.
They lack a big personality in the attack whom the creative players believe in and they know they just need to get the ball to him and he will score.
You need this sort of players when the opposition sit back , play compact and close up space at the back like Burnley Remember what Suarez once brought to Liverpool , you just need to get the ball to him and he will score.
They failed to get one and they will keep struggling against teams that set up like Burnley. Firminho cant lead the line effectively because he loves the ball at his feet which is one quality every attacker in Liverpool possess.
They should have signed box predator who can put goal scoring burden of the team on his shoulder and he won’t be bothered.
